What is a QR Code?
A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a type of two-dimensional matrix barcode invented in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave. Unlike standard 1D barcodes that only store data horizontally, QR codes store data both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold significantly more information—up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters.
How It Works: The Anatomy
A QR code consists of several key zones: 1. Finder Patterns: The three large squares in the corners that tell the scanner the code's orientation. 2. Alignment Patterns: Smaller squares that help correct distortion if the code is curved. 3. Timing Patterns: Alternating black and white modules that define the coordinate system. 4. Quiet Zone: The white empty space around the code that separates it from the surroundings.
Reed-Solomon Error Correction
One of the most powerful features of QR codes is their ability to sustain damage and still function. This is achieved using Reed-Solomon error correction algorithms (originally used for deep space communication). There are four levels: Level L (7% damage recovery), Level M (15%), Level Q (25%), and Level H (30%).
